MetaTrader 5
MetaTrader 5 is the MetaQuotes terminal, running against the XBTFX server. It installs on Windows and macOS, has apps for phones and tablets, and works in a browser if you would rather not install anything.
The three things you need
Signing in takes a login number, a password and a server name. They come from two places:
| Where it comes from | |
|---|---|
| Login number | The confirmation when you open the account, and the account row in the portal |
| Password | The welcome email, and nowhere else |
| Server | XBTFX-MetaTrader5, address mt5.xbtfx.com |
The password is only in the email
It is not shown in the portal and support cannot read it back to you. If the email has not arrived after a few minutes, check spam before opening another account. Support can confirm whether it was sent.
Downloads
| Device | Download |
|---|---|
| Windows | XBTFX installer |
| macOS | MetaTrader 5 for macOS |
| Android | Google Play, or the .apk file directly |
| Browser | WebTrader |
The Windows download is the XBTFX build, so the server is already in the list
when you first open it. The macOS and Android downloads are the standard
MetaQuotes app, which knows nothing about XBTFX until you search for
XBTFX-MetaTrader5 and pick it.
On iPhone and iPad, use MetaTrader 5 from the App Store if you have it, adding the account with the same server name. WebTrader in mobile Safari does the same job without an install.
Signing in
On desktop, open File, then Login to Trade Account. Type the server name into the search box, select it, then enter your login number and password.
On mobile, open the menu, choose to add an account, search for
XBTFX-MetaTrader5, then enter the login and password.
WebTrader is already pointed at the XBTFX server, so it only asks for the login and password.
The same account signs in on several devices at once. A chart layout on the desktop and the same account open on a phone is normal and supported.
Demo and live are different servers on your side
A demo login will not work against a live account and the reverse is also true. “Invalid account” almost always means the wrong login, not a problem with the platform. Check the account row in the portal under the Live or Demo tab.
What the terminal gives you
- 21 timeframes and more than 80 built in technical indicators.
- Six types of pending order.
- Depth of Market, showing the book behind the price.
- One click trading.
- A built in economic calendar and news feed.
- A multi threaded strategy tester for backtesting Expert Advisors.
Crypto balances are held on the account directly, so a BTC denominated account shows its balance in BTC rather than converting it for display.
Expert Advisors
MT5 runs Expert Advisors, the automated strategies written in MQL5, and the MQL5 marketplace sells thousands of them alongside indicators and signals.
Two things are worth being clear about. An EA runs on your machine, not on the XBTFX server, so it stops when your machine sleeps or loses its connection. And neither XBTFX nor MetaQuotes vouches for what a third party EA or indicator does once you install it. That risk is yours.
If you would rather automate against a documented interface than inside the terminal, the XBTFX Trading API covers the same account from outside the platform.
Scheduled restarts
The MT5 servers restart daily at 21:15 GMT+0, and at 20:00 on Sundays, for up to ten minutes. The liquidity bridge restarts at 21:06 GMT+0, on the same Sunday schedule. Being disconnected around those times is the maintenance window rather than a fault, and the terminal reconnects on its own once the server is back.
