MAM
In a MAM strategy your money never leaves your own trading account. The manager trades a single master account, and every order placed there is allocated into each investor’s account according to a rule the manager sets. You hold your own positions, in your own account, under your own login.
That is the whole difference from PAMM, and it explains most of what follows. There is no pool and no share price, so there is nothing to value at a scheduled rollover. Joining takes effect straight away, your balance is simply the balance of a trading account, and you can watch positions appear in the terminal as the manager opens them.
The pieces
| Master account | The account the manager trades. None of your money is in it. |
| Managed account | A numbered trading account in your name, opened when you invest. |
| Allocation | The rule that turns one master order into a position in your account. |
MAM lives under Invest in the portal, across the same three tabs as every other strategy type: Discover for browsing, My investments for accounts that are being traded for you, My strategies for strategies you run.
A managed account also shows up on the Accounts page with your ordinary trading accounts. It has no Trade action, because the manager trades it and you do not.
Joining a strategy
Reading the strategy page
Filter Discover to MAM and open one. The header carries the all time gain, the maximum drawdown, the win rate and the investor count.
Before you invest is the panel to read first. It lists every charge the manager has set, the minimum investment, and what happens to trades that are already open when you join. Under it sits the line that matters most for MAM: trades are allocated to your own dedicated account, where your funds and positions stay.
About this strategy holds the manager’s own description, the product (managed account), the base currency, and the date trading started. If the manager has written nothing, the page says so rather than filling the space.
Performance and track record is the verified account record, switchable between returns and monthly returns over 1M, 3M, 6M, 1Y or all. Balance, equity, open trades and history may each read Private. That is the manager’s privacy setting, not a fault.
Two terms on the page decide what you get. Minimum investment is set by the manager and can be zero. New members decides whether you start flat or inherit the positions the manager already has open, and New trades only means your account starts empty and fills as the manager trades from here.
Investing
Invest opens a three step flow: the account, the money, the review. A summary of the strategy sits beside all three, with the master platform, the master currency and the fees.
Step one builds the account the strategy will trade. It is new every time, dedicated to this one strategy.
- Platform is yours to pick, and it does not have to match the master. Both platforms take the same allocation feed.
- Account type and leverage are fixed by the tier the strategy requires.
- Account currency does not have to match the master either. A master in USD can allocate into an investor account held in something else, and the difference is handled for you.
- Account name comes prefilled with the strategy name. It is a label for your own dashboard, nothing more.
Step two is the amount and where it comes from. Pick the wallet, and the page shows what is available in it and whether the deposit needs a conversion. Funding from a wallet already in the account currency does not.
Step three reads the whole thing back: the account being created, the wallet debit, the conversion, and the fees you are agreeing to. The footer restates what the investor account actually receives.
Confirming does three things at once: creates the account, funds it, and activates the subscription. There is no queue and no cut off time. The next order the manager sends is allocated to you.
The flow calls it an investor account and your dashboard calls it a managed account. Same account, same number.
Your managed account
Open it from My investments. The header shows current value, balance and account profit and loss, with the account number underneath.
Investment overview confirms the type, the currency, the status, the account number and the platform. Manager terms repeats the fees you agreed to when you joined, with a link through to the statement.
Investor access is specific to MAM. The managed account is a real trading account on the platform, so you can watch it live in the terminal. No separate investor password is issued, because you already have the account.
Watching the trades
Open positions lists what is open in your account right now. New trades appear here when the manager opens them.
Trade history is the closed record for your account, and only for your account. Two investors in the same strategy see different numbers here, because allocation sizes their trades differently.
Full account report opens the complete statement for the account.
Fees
The Fees tab separates two steps of the same charge. Charged is the fee once it has been calculated. Collected means it has actually left your trading account. A fee can sit as charged for a while before it is collected, and both are checked again when you withdraw or leave.
Trading costs are not fees in this sense. Spreads and commissions show up in trade history, not here.
Leaving
Exit investment, at the bottom of the Details tab, closes the positions that were mirrored into your account, settles what is owed, and ends your membership.
Your money does not move. It stays in the managed account, and you withdraw it from there once settlement has finished.
Running a strategy
Creating it
+ Create strategy on the Invest page opens a four step wizard.
Step one is the model. Managed Accounts · MAM is the one where investors keep their own accounts and your trades are copied into them based on each investor’s allocation.
Step two is the master account. Create a new one, or promote an account you already have. Pick the platform, Mega1 or MetaTrader 5, and the currency the strategy runs in.
Accounts that are already acting as a master or an investor elsewhere are hidden from the existing account list, and the wizard tells you how many it hid. An account can only play one role.
Step three sets the name and the charges. Every fee is optional except the one you decide to charge:
| Fee | Basis |
|---|---|
| Performance | Percentage of profits, charged daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly |
| Subscription | Flat amount in the strategy currency, on the same choice of periods |
| Management | Percentage of assets, on the same choice of periods |
| Volume | Amount per million of closed trades |
| Joining | One off amount when an investor joins |
New members decides what happens to trades that are already open when someone joins: start them fresh, copy the open positions across, or copy only the positions currently showing a better entry price than the market.
Step four reads it all back: name, type, account, fee and currency.
If the wizard created a new master account, the login details arrive by email. Investors can join as soon as the strategy exists.
The overview
Open the strategy from My strategies. The header carries managed assets, master equity, active investors and the master account number.
The Master account panel is the trading account’s own balance, equity, floating profit and loss, and free margin. It does not include investor assets, because investor assets are not in it. You trade this account and the platform allocates each order out to the active investor accounts.
Add funds and Withdraw in the header move money in and out of that master account. It is your own capital, so there is no restriction on doing it, but it is not a neutral act: when an investor is set to scale by equity, their trade size is measured against the master’s equity. Change the master balance and you change the size of every future investor trade.
Strategy snapshot covers managed assets, active investors, pending requests and fees awaiting settlement. Investor-facing terms shows whether the strategy is listed and whether an invite code is needed, with Edit settings leading to the tab where both are changed.
Investors and allocation
The Investors tab is the list of everyone the strategy is trading for: the masked account number, the status, the allocation rule in force, the trade direction, open positions and unsettled fees.
Manage opens the panel where you set that investor’s allocation. Four rules are available:
| Scale by investor equity | Trade size follows the investor’s equity relative to the master account |
| Scale by investor balance | The same, measured on balance instead of equity |
| Fixed lot size | Every allocated trade is the same size, whatever the account holds |
| Master volume multiplier | A multiple of the volume you traded on the master |
The allocation multiplier then adjusts the result. At 1 the rule applies as it stands.
Three more controls sit below it:
- Allocate opposite to the master inverts the direction of allocated trades for that investor.
- Pause new trades stops new positions from being opened in the account. Existing positions carry on and still follow your exits.
- Remove investor closes their mirrored positions, settles fees and ends their membership. They can subscribe again later.
Allocation and direction changes apply only to future positions. Anything already open keeps the size and direction it was opened with.
Fees you charge
The Fees tab totals fees per currency and splits them the same two ways the investor sees: Charged is the fee calculated against an investor, Collected means it has left the investor’s account.
Payment into your own wallet is a separate step from either figure. Each currency is totalled on its own.
Partners
The Partners tab shares part of your fee income with someone who brings you investors. Invite them by email and set a percentage on each of the performance, volume and subscription fees.
The percentages are slices of your own fee, not extra charges to the investor, and they only apply to investments made from that point on. Existing investors are unaffected. The invitation has to be accepted first, and the portal will not tell you whether the address you typed belongs to an XBTFX account.
Profile, links and privacy
Publishing and listing are two different switches, and mixing them up is the most common reason a manager thinks their strategy has disappeared:
- Publish, on the Profile and privacy tab, creates the public page at
portal.xbtfx.com/s/. - Listing on the Strategies leaderboard is controlled in Settings.
Profile holds the square strategy image, a one line headline, the About text and an optional manager location. Image changes save immediately, unlike the rest of the form. The location is display text only and is never taken from your verification documents.
Links sets the public page address and your social handles. Handles for social accounts, full links for Myfxbook or your own website, and only secure links are published. A checkbox decides whether search engines may list the page.
Changing the public page address breaks every link you have already shared.
Privacy governs open trades, history, balance, equity, assets under management and investor count. Each is public, limited to signed in users, or private, and the setting applies to both the public page and the portal strategy page. Private stays private even after someone signs in.
Two behaviours catch people out. Amounts and trade sizes only appear when balance and equity are both visible. Growth is shown independently of any of it, so you can keep every figure private and still publish a track record.
Settings
Settings is where the strategy name, the minimum entry, the listing switch, the invite code, the fees and the new member rule are changed after the fact.
The strategy name is independent of the label on the trading account. List on Markets set to off unlists the strategy without breaking the share link. An invite code gates joining and nothing else: anyone with the link can still look.
Fee changes apply to accrual from now on and history is never rewritten. Clearing a fee field removes that fee from the plan rather than setting it to zero.
Closing it
Close fund at the bottom of Settings removes the strategy from the leaderboard and from every live path, and frees the master account to be used for something else. Every investor has to exit first. It cannot be undone.
When something looks wrong
- You invested and nothing is open. Normal on a strategy set to new trades only. Your account fills as the manager trades.
- Your trade sizes do not match another investor’s. They are not supposed to. Allocation is set per account, and the manager can change it.
- A position did not resize after an allocation change. Changes apply to future positions only.
- Fees show as charged but not collected. Two steps of one fee. Collection follows, and both are rechecked when you withdraw or leave.
- Nobody can find your strategy. Publishing creates the public page. Listing on the leaderboard is a separate switch in Settings.
- An account is missing from the create strategy wizard. It is already a master or an investor account somewhere else.
Anything else, use the chat widget with the strategy name and the managed account number.
